“Color and Color Mixing for Painters”

 

Description:

         Color presents a complex problem in composing an artwork.  Mixing paint blindly may waste valuable time and money while not achieving the desired results.

         This course provides the students with the understanding of color and the hands-on practice to gain the control of the color mixing through carefully designed exercises.

 

 

Lesson 1

 

Color Sensation (white light, selective absorption, long/short waves etc.)

-  “Primary, Secondary, Tertiary” Colors

-  Properties of Color (hue, value, intensity, temperature)

-  Scales - hue, tint, tone, shadow

 

Lesson 2

 

-  Warm and Cool Colors (warming, cooling colors)

-  Color Wheel (regular<>Munsell)

-  Color Wheel (split primaries)

-  Color Wheel (painter's - unsaturated warm zone)

 

Lesson 3

 

   -  Spectrum Value of Pigments (tonal scale - organizing hues)

   -  White and Black  (their relation to the short wavelength

      and long wavelength colors)

   -  Chromatic Scales (using neutral gray)

   -  Progression of Hues (dominant hue)

 

Lesson 4

 

   -  Complementary Colors (after-images)

   -  Near-complementary Colors

   -  Colorful Grays

 

Lesson 5

 

    - Composite Colorful Grays

    - Chromatic Scales - (using complementary grays)

    - Grays in Nature

 

Lesson 6

 

   -  Lightening Low Spectrum Colors and Darkening

      High Spectrum Colors without weakness

   -  Modifying Color in Light, Shadow, and Reflection

   -  Harmony in Hues

   -  Palette (restricted/extended, earthy/saturated)

   -  Methods of Underpainting (grisaille, monochrome, low chroma)

   -  Lean/Fat Colors
